The phantoms of five of the most haunted places in Delaware are eager to tell their spooky stories. Here are our spine-chilling picks from the First State!
Fort Delaware State Park
Delaware City, Delaware
Constructed in 1859, it soon became a prison camp for Confederate soldiers, conditions here were notoriously horrid. Most of the prisoners were captured during the horrendous aftermath of the battles in Gettysburg. General Albin F. Schoept, aka "General Terror", assured the conditions of living here were a form of punishment. Food rations were tiny and hardly edible. Imagine prisoners ghastly fighting over each other for their next meal ... of rats! The water was contaminated, and diseases followed rapidly, including scurvy, smallpox, and severe malnutrition. 2,700 men perished in this camp. Could some of these souls have remained within these walls, desperate to find peace and or vengeance? The presence of phantoms, poltergeists, and even malicious spirits commonly are discovered within the prison halls and tunnels. Witnesses have claimed to hear the disembodied footsteps of the soldiers and voices of those that once lived through the horrible conditions.

Addy Sea Bed & Breakfast
Bethany Beach, Delaware
Spirit activity can be found just about everywhere in this Victorian Style Inn, built in 1901 by John M. Addy. Some rooms, though, have even more energy. For instance, Room 1, where several guests have experienced violent shaking when sitting in the unique copper bathtub. There have been many attempts to debunk this activity by taking a close look at its structure and plumbing. There is an association of the original Mr. Addy with this tub. Make sure to read more about it HERE! Then there is Room 11, which is haunted by a former employee, Paul Dulaney, even though he died on a construction site. His phantom is said to visit his old room at the Inn, making his presence known by sitting or standing on the bed. Although it has a lovely Jacuzzi tub, it will start filling with water on its own and the phone may suddenly turn off. The spirit of Kurty Addy is believed to frequent the roof where guests hear sounds of his footsteps. Kurty Addy died after falling off the roof of the inn, and guests say that he walks the roof restlessly at night. There are so many haunts to mention, make sure to read our full extended story!

Crabby Dicks
Rehoboth Beach, Delaware
Constructed back in 1830, the original Delaware City Hotel was a popular tavern that hosted all types of folks, including many of the soldiers that were stationed at the nearby Fort Delaware. Here they would spend their off-hours drinking, probably attempting to forget what they saw or what they did. Today it is Crabby Dick's Restaurant! (And the ghosts have not left!) Witnesses can attest to the hauntings, and several paranormal investigations have backed up the claims. The current owner says spooky things are still happening. The story tells us that the ghost of the original owner's wife occasionally appears -- but reveals herself only to men. Expect to hear unexplained loud noises coming from all areas of the old building. Doors will suddenly open and close ... on their own! You may join hundreds of guests that have captured startling orbs on photographs.

Brick Hotel on the Circle
Bethany Beach, Delaware
The existing structure was built in 1836 on the grounds of where an old Public House once stood. It was called the Union Hotel and served much of the Union Soldiers during the Civil War. The hotel does have a stormy past. Back in the day, it was associated with the worst of the worst, a rough clientele for sure! Now, this quaint historical inn has an intense haunted history. Locked doors open on their own. It's almost like unseen hands lift the latch and push the doors open. Paintings actually have moved around in the rooms on their own. It is common that the lights flicker to questions, confirming an intelligent connection. The showers will sometimes turn on by themselves at around midnight. The owners and staff claim their spirits are super friendly and have even named them! Known as George and Ophelia. According to the staff, the spirits know who they will play with or not.

Bewitched & BEDazzled Bed and Breakfast
Rehoboth Beach, Delaware
Eleanor Sigsbee has never checked out of this quaint inn, overstaying her visit by over 120 years. She is just one testimony of the Bewitched & BEDazzled Bed and Breakfast's intense spectral activity. Joining Eleanor, is an old sea captain, Capt. Charles Dwight Sigsbee, and his family. (Yes, family.) It is said, the former USS Maine sailor died in this building. Included in his kindred clan is his 12-13-year-old daughter, who's appeared to a few folks in a full apparition form down in the basement. Her brother and mother are said to roam the grounds, as well. Some of the experiences you will receive are door shutting/opening on their own, apparitions, hearing strange noises in the hallways, phantom footsteps, and disembodied voices. Inez, the Innkeeper says the BEDazzled house tends to have more adult ghosts that can be seen and heard. Unlike the children at the Bewitched house, which tend to make their appearances at night. Not to worry, Inez reassures! The spirits that employees encountered here are pint-sized and playful, just like Tabitha in the TV series.
