The phantoms of five of the most haunted places in Michigan are eager to tell their spooky stories. Here are our spine-chilling picks from the Great Lakes State!

William Peter’s Mansion

Columbiaville, Michigan

This stately mansion was built in 1892, reflecting an era of historic wealth and uncompromised quality. It tells a story of many past lives that have much to tell. The innkeepers and their brave guests will tell you that the Gentlemen's Quarters at the inn has a strong presence that cannot be explained. There is also the "lady of the house" that has been caught clearly on a photograph standing on the grand staircase. Could she be the one in the GQ? Not sure, since the voice has been captured on a class A EVP up in the attic.  Sometimes it will accompany unexplained knockings.   Others have reported hearing groans and moans as caught on digital recordings. This is definitely a top choice to find a good chill in Michigan!

Clive & Dot’s Anchor Inn

Houghton Lake, Michigan

This 100-year-old family restaurant, lounge, and old hotel have been recording paranormal activity since the 1940s and 1950s.  So intense are their hauntings that they have been featured in the Haunted Travels of Michigan: Spirits Rising book! They are a professional expedition favorite of many paranormal investigators as well, never disappointing!  Here expect to see full-body apparitions, shadow figures, intelligent orbs, miss, disembodied footsteps, and voices. Don't be started when door slam, facets turn on/off on their own, and being touched by "no one". Their collection of photo, video, and audio evidence is the envy of any haunted property, but they display it with respect. This is absolutely a must-go-to spot when traveling up in Michigan!

Big Bay Point Lighthouse Bed & Breakfast

Big Bay, Michigan

This lighthouse was built in 1897 as a duplex that provided housing for not just the head lighthouse keeper but his assistant and his family. The first innkeeper, William Prior's son was also his assistant but unfortunately fell on the steps, dying two months later from his injuries. Prior was so depressed over his son's death that he took his life. Another tragedy occurred in the 1950s when the lighthouse was leased to the US Army. One of its soldiers murdered the owner of a local tavern for raping his wife. The haunts follow the events that history has placed on this property. The ghost of William Prior has been witnessed by many, appearing as a red-haired man wandering the property. One overnight guest reported seeing the reflection of a man, with red hair, wearing a keeper's hat standing behind her in the mirror. Other guests have awakened from sleep to find a man gazing at them from the end of their beds. Don't keep your guard down for ghosts here! Countless other stories tie the ghosts to crewmembers lost at sea during nearby shipwrecks.

Blue Pelican Inn

Central Lake, Michigan

Blue Pelican Inn

The waters of Michigan do intensify spectral activity. The Blue Pelican Inn, sitting on the Northern Michigan’s Chain of Lakes region, is no exception. Historical research found much death associated with this property, one from one of the managers of the ’20s and ’30s. Another one involves a young gal that plunged to her death while trying to elope from a second-floor window. Many unexplained noises of muffled sounds, banging and light scratching was heard. None could be explained as sounds from an old building. There also have been full apparitions reported, specifically in the linen closet. Don't look away too fast from staring at the dormer windows from the street. There may be a chance that you will spot a little girl still holding on to her treasured school books. Is she waiting for school to start?

S.S. City of Milwaukee

Manistee, Michigan

SS City of Milwaukee

Built in 1931, the SS City of Milwaukee is a railroad car ferry. It is the only pre-1940s ship of this type to survive and is now a museum ship, Bed and Breakfast, and even a true haunted venue for many to explore!  Here is another example of waters enriching the phantom's energies for incredible activity!  Visitors have reported eerie noises, disembodied voices and footsteps, and apparitions on the ferry.  Sometimes unexplained floral aroma will be experienced. There is one small room that no one likes to go into, at least alone. It was previously used by a crew member who died there on a night many years ago. The ferry's first captain, Stormy Jack's phantom, also lurks through the ship. He prefers the captain's stateroom. An apparition of a woman dressed in white has been reported; it is said she fell overboard.
