Enterprise, AL is home to one of the most haunted inns and eateries in the nation, Rawls Restaurant and Bed & Breakfast. Come explore its offerings with Haunted Journeys.
The Rawls was built in 1903 by Captain Japheth Rawls. It was expanded in 1923. It was deemed a significant property as one of the most elaborate buildings in Coffee County. It was located strategically across from the train station and has served as a landmark and central meeting place for the citizens of Enterprise.
In 1980, it was listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Today it serves as a fine dining restaurant with an adjoining bed and breakfast. But these changes have not diverted the spectral properties this property has kept for decades.
Captain Japheth Rawls, is said to lurk around the property’s cellar. Many waitresses have been startled by his sudden apparition. He prefers to hang out in the basement. His presence there could probably explain some of the strange supernatural activity that happens there. Witnessed have repeatedly seen a soda can randomly sitting in the middle of the basement. Yes, it is on the same spot where Captain Rawls’ spirit appears. After it is put back in their place, they will return to find a can once again sitting on the floor of the basement.
It appears the Captain likes to keep things in order. Years ago when the building was being remodeled a construction worker began cursing and yelling after making a mistake. Suddenly, out of nowhere, a piece of wood flew through the air and slammed into him.
Another well known haunted story is about the "Lady in Red". She will appear supposedly near the second story stairs where she was reportedly pushed from the balcony to her death.
Over the years, many other claims have been made of the hauntings at the Rawls. These included the sound of children’s laugher to disembodied voices. The sounds of glass breaking of glasses, when there was no visible source. Other activities center around mischievous spirits that hang out in its kitchen, stealing utensils and even banging pots and pans.
The Old Rawls has been known for decades as one of the most haunted locations in Enterprise and a building with over 100 years of history. It also remains one of the top fine-dining restaurants in the city, and the possibility is always present that anyone staying at the bed and breakfast could have their own paranormal experience.
