Jerome AZ is home to one of the most haunted places in the state, Jerome Grand Hotel. Come explore its mystery with Haunted Journeys.
Originally constructed in 1926, the Jerome Grand Hotel was formerly the United Verde Hospital. The hospital featured major and minor surgical facilities. Prepared to handle the demanding medical needs of patients with tuberculosis, it was equipped with modern patient call lights, balconies, sun porches. It was also classified as one of the most modern hospitals in Arizona, it offered laboratory services, radiology all backed up for lighting. The wards were divided for serving men, women, and children needs separately. It also accommodated private and semi-private rooms. They even offered housing for some of the hospital staff.
The hospital closed in 1950 but was maintained fully furnished for approximately 20 years. The furnishings were removed in the 70s and ’80s. To keep up with it, the owners hired a live-in caretaker. They also leased it to a family to keep it occupied and safe from vandals.
After the suicidal death of the last caretaker in the 1980s, the building was boarded up. It was left to the surveillance of the local police to watch over the large property.
In 1993, entrepreneur Larry Altherr purchased the building, renovating to its grandeur hotel status. He still owns and operates the hotel today.
When the owner first moved into the property in 1994 and started working on it, for the first month he felt almost as though he was not welcomed. Fortunately, as the renovations continued on, that feeling started fading and eventually went away. Some say this was all the phantom of a nurse that created all the havoc!
There is a spirit of a nurse that worked at the hospital. They claim she was upset with the removal of the desks they worked out of. When the restaurant area was remodeled, the original desks were relocated within a few feet of their original placement. All the trouble subsided!
You will hear many accounts of spectral activity in this historical building. You will hear the phantom sounds of activity found within an old hospital. Many hear keys attempting to unlock doors, perhaps those belonging to the old ward. Items will move around in the rooms, on their own. Apparitions are also frequently reported here. Take a look at a few captured on photos included in our second gallery below. Interestingly, most were from the hallway.
There is also a story about a maintenance man who was found dead in 1935 from an elevator accident. Employees have reported hearing or even briefly seeing his apparition still working hard on his job. A photo of the entity captured on the elevator has also been included in our second gallery below.
There is no debate that this is a must-experience hotel if you wish to experience a bit of the supernaturally historical trip. So thrilling are the haunts here, that Ghost Adventures featured this property on their television series a few times!
