Harrisonburg VA is home to one of the most haunted places in the state, By the Side of the Road Inn & Cottages. Come explore its mystery with Haunted Journeys.

The History

Built in 1789 By the Side of the Road Inn, it was initially the home of a prominent conscientious objector and early leader of the Mennonite Church, Bishop Peter Burkholder and his son, Martin. During the Civil War, it was used as a safe haven of sorts while General Phillip Sheridan swept through Virginia's Shenandoah Valley, burning everything in this path. (This was called the "Burning of the Valley".) From this, the property became a makeshift hospital responding to some of the devastations that resulted. Due to its interior brick walls, the property itself survived three attempts by Sheridan to set it on fire. Because of this, the building was used to shelter soldiers and homeless neighbors alike.

John B. Wenger owned and occupied the house in 1864. He was a Union sympathizer and could be counted on to hide Union soldiers from Confederates in the area.

The house is nothing like this today, but fundamentally still offers the delights that a historic inn could provide. It has expanded to offering a line of luxury cottages to stay at this inn. The inn proudly serves the community as a high-end getaway established in 1999.

The Hauntings

There is a wide range of ghostly activity here, probably trickling from the Civil War events it endured. Being a property that endured the agony and sadness from being a hospital and space to be protected, the energies of these moments have never left. They now are still represented by its phantoms that lurk this inn.

Doors will open and close on their own. Many hear unexplained disembodied footsteps. The apparitions of men in uniform have been witnessed by many. Sounds that cannot be explained are commonly heard. You may hear spontaneous and baffling knocks on the wall. None of the activity is said to be frightening, so this would be a perfect getaway for the light ghost enthusiast. What is the best spot to catch a glimpse of a ghost? Ask to stay at the main inn on the top floor, which is said to get the most activity during the night!
