Girdwood, AK is home to one of the most haunted places the State, Alyeska Resort. Come explore its mystery with Haunted Journeys.
In 1954, 11 residents of Girdwood passed a hat and raised enough money to purchase what became the land base for a major ski area. Through initiative and perseverance, they developed a ski area that was small in assets but big in promise. Soon after they found a French Baron, Francois de Gunzburg, who shared their dream, installing a Poma chairlift, built ski trails, and a day lodge.
Today it stands to be a well-known ski destination, with incredible steep terrain and deep snowpack. It is also well known for its spectral activity!
Although the actual Alyeska Resort opened our doors to guests in 1994, as this property is, it is considered to be one of the most haunted hotels in Alaska. Perhaps it can be explained with the many tragedies that have occurred within the hotel, and the accidents on the slopes and the treacherous outdoors.
One occurrence left a strong imprint on the hotel. In September 2001, a guest named Chris (who happened to be a stockbroker) committed suicide slitting his wrists in room 721. Since then, lights flicker, doors that open and close on their own, the television turns on/off, draws open/close and faucets that turn on and off in the middle of the night. One guest saw the man’s apparition standing in the doorway to the bathroom. When the guest spoke to the ghost, it suddenly vanished. To relieve some of this activity, the furniture from room 721 was moved to room 723 after the incident, and similar activity followed in the new room as well! Don't miss out on room 515, where the door also opens and closes on its own, even when locked! Chris's ghost is also credited for this.
Perhaps Dr. William Mills, an Anchorage well respected orthopedic surgeon, died at the age of 53 in a skiing accident in 2011 near the hotel. He is also among the hotel’s permanent guests. So too, perhaps, is the man who drunkenly committed suicide by jumping from his third-floor balcony.
There are still many more phantoms that lurk in this property but remain unknown of their former earthbound lives.
