The hotel originally opened in 1902; it was conceived as an apartment hotel but was converted to a traditional hotel. The first owner-manager, Frank Case, who bought the hotel in 1927, established many traditions of the hotel. The most well-known tradition is hosting literary and theatrical notables. The Algonquin Round Table was a distinguished group of writers that included Dorothy Parker, Alexander Woollcott, Franklin Adams, Robert Benchley, George S. Kaufman and Harold Ross that would meet in the hotel dining room to bounce around ideas. Harold Ross founded the American magazine, The New Yorker, with his wife, reporter Jane Grant, during one of these meetings in 1925. The hotel has changed owners several times and is currently part of Marriott’s Autograph Collection brand.
Some believe the ghosts seen throughout the hotel maybe be members of the There have even been some reports of guests seeing apparitions. Many believe the spirits are members of the Algonquin Round Table, including Dorothy. Over the years, guests and staff have heard footsteps in empty hallways and spotted apparitions in the lobby and dining room. Guests have heard the moving of furniture in the middle of the night and the elevators are known to stop on all floors.
