New Orleans, LA is home to one of the most haunted places in the state, Place d'Armes Hotel. Come Explore its mystery with Haunted Journeys.
The historic Place d’Armes hotel rests in the heart of the New Orleans French Quarter, near many other historically and culturally rich sites. The hotel is an excellent example of 18th-century architecture, resonating as a traditional landscape found in New Orleans.
The hotel is named, Place d’ Armes for it is where the military was stationed (at one point) in the Quarter, so it became known as a “place of arms.”
As the site of the first Louisiana school, the Place d’Armes Hotel is a registered historic landmark. In 1725 Father Raphael De Luxembourg Capuchin opened this first school in French colonial Louisiana, teaching a variety of classes for students of all ages where the Place d’Armes now stands.
Tragedy embellishes this noble property. In 1788, this is where the Great New Orleans Fire destroyed most of this school, killing the school’s headmaster and several students.
Often called the most haunted hotel in New Orleans. Many believe that the Great New Orleans Fire, where many children and teachers were burned to death provides the rationale for the spectral activity in this hotel. Many claim they still roam the halls of this hotel.
Guests report hearing the sounds of footsteps, voices, and laugher above their room, even when the staff claim they are unoccupied. These unchecked rooms seem to be the target of the phantom activity where furniture is moved around (on their own) and music is heard without an identifiable source.
Other witnesses have reported other additional specific entities. One of which has been reported as being an elderly bearded man dressed in 1800’s attire. He is said to appear and nod to guests then vanishes.
People who have not experienced any of this paranormal activity for themselves do eventually admit that the Place d' Armes has a definite otherworldly feel to it.
