Boyle is home to one of the most haunted places in Ireland, Boyle Abbey.  Come Explore its mystery with Haunted Journeys

The History

Built in 1134, this structure was a former Cistercian Monastery, gifted by Henry I of England. It remains impressive and well preserved under the patronage of the local ruling family, the MacDermotts.

The Cistercian Monks built a church on the north side of a rectangular cloister area, with a chapter house for meetings on a second side, a kitchen and refectory on the third, and storehouses and a dormitory likely on the fourth.

Though mutilated during the 17th and 18th centuries when it was used to accommodate a military garrison, Boyle Abbey is considered to be one of the best-preserved priories of its kind in Ireland.

The Hauntings

This 12th-century abbey has a number of legends and ghost stories relating to its past, including "The White Lady", thought to be Matilda of England, daughter of Henry I, imprisoned here for 5 years.

In addition, a town folk tells of a story as a child living there. Prior to its restoration, they found an old bloodstain in one of the benches, rumored by the locals to be the blood of a monk that was killed there. Hence, they were warned, not to touch or its phantom would come out of the dark ruins.
