Exeter, RI is home to one of the most haunted places in the state, Chestnut Hill Baptist Church Cemetery. Come explore its mystery with Haunted Journeys.
The church building was constructed in 1838 in a Greek Revival style. The church was added to the National Register of Historic Places on November 21, 1978. The root cause of all the hauntings of this cemetery goes back to one of the bodies that is buried here, that of Mercy Brown.
In 1892, Mercy Brown died of Tuberculosis at the age of 19. Her mother and sister also died of the disease years earlier. Her brother, Edwin, was also inflicted with TB about the same time Mercy did. During this period in New England, vampires became a local hysteria. People of this time period believed that vampires existed and terrified at the thought of the undead rising from their graves.
After Mercy died, there were rumors that at least one member of the family was a vampire. Her father, George, conceded to the villagers and gave permission to exhume the bodies of his deceased family. At this time, it was noted that Mercy's body had yet not started to decompose. In fact her hair and fingernails had continued to grow after her burial. The town folk officially declared she was an alleged vampire.
Mercy's heart was removed and burned to prevent her from rising from the grave. The only thing that resulted from this act, is the restless soul of Mercy began to haunt this burial ground.
Soon after Mercy's body was exhumed and her heart was removed, people started to see her ghost walking the cemetery wearing ripped and dirty clothing. She approached unsuspecting visitors to allow her to rest in peace.
People who are standing close to Mercy's grave have claimed to have been pushed very hard away, enough to tumble then! Others have claimed to hear strange noises around the grave-site, with orbs and other strange lights in the area. Religiously motivated visitors often stop by to bless Mercy and say a prayer at her gravestone. It's common for them to smell an overwhelmingly strong scent of roses right after their prayers are uttered. Many folks have claimed to see Mercy's full-body apparition walking around the cemetery at night.
