History

Big Moose Lake NY is home to one of the most haunted places in the state, Big Moose Lake. Come explore its mystery with Haunted Journeys.

THE HISTORY

The lake is located in the Adirondacks in upstate New York. The lake is popular because of its climate and beauty. It was the site of the murder of Grace Brown in 1906 by her boyfriend.
Grace Brown moved to Cortland to work at the Gillette Skirt Factory, where she met the nephew of the owner, Chester Gillette.
The two began dating in secret because a factory worker wasn't up to the Gillette's family standards. In May of 1906, Brown told Gillette she was pregnant. Brown went back to her family's farm and they corresponded by letters, in which she begged him to marry her.
Gillette finally wrote back that he would take her away on a romantic outing to the Adirondacks in July. Grace Brown was sure he was going to propose or possibly marry her while they were away.

Gillette and Brown rented a canoe and spent the afternoon on the lake. In the early evening, Gillette smashed Brown's head with the tennis racket and she fell into the water and drown.
Gillette fled the scene and Brown's body surfaced not long afterward. When the autopsy revealed bruises on her head and the pregnancy, Gillette was arrested. He was tried and Gillette maintained his innocence. After five hours of deliberation, the jury found Gillette guilty of murder in the first degree, and he was sentenced to death by electric chair. He was executed on March 30, 1908.

THE HAUNTINGS

Grace's spirit is often seen drowning, but some have also reported her wandering the lakeshore.
