 THE HAUNTINGS

One of the country's most infamous haunted houses has been the subject of numerous books, Hollywood films, as well as documentaries.
On November 13, 1974, Ronald DeFeo Jr. walked into a bar near the home and said, "You got to help me! I think my mother and father are shot!" His parents and four siblings had all been shot to death. DeFoe Jr. confessed to the killings the next day, admitting that he had taken a bath and changed his clothing. At his trial he pleaded insanity, DeFeo was an abuser of LSD and heroin, who also had an antisocial personality disorder but was aware of his actions at the time of the crime. He was convicted and is serving a life sentence.

George and Kathy Lutz claimed an entity ripped doors from hinges and slammed doors, noxious slime oozed from the ceilings, and demonic faces and swarms of insects threatened the family. They also witnessed an entity staring at them from their upstairs window when they were outside. Researchers who double-checked claims made by the Lutzes found numerous holes in the Amityville story. The Lutzes stuck to their account and reaped tens of thousands of dollars from the book and film rights.

It will always be known as America's most haunted home.
