History

Cashtown PA is home to one of the most haunted places in the state, Cashtown Inn. Come Explore its mystery with Haunted Journeys.

THE HISTORY

As one of the oldest hotels in the region opened in 1797, Cashtown Inn provided a bed and a meal for travelers since 1815. The name Cashtown Inn comes from the first innkeeper, Peter Marck, who had insisted on being paid in cash for the items he sold and the tolls he collected. The Inn was known for its clean mountain air and good water from the spring that ran through the cellar.

The cellar also contained two brick ovens, both the spring and the remains of the ovens are still there today.

Cashtown was briefly occupied by the Confederate cavalry under the command of Jeb Stuart in October 1862 and during the Battle of Gettysburg, it became the headquarters of General A. P. Hill. Cashtown was an armed camp for several days in 1863, while the battle of Gettysburg raged eight miles away. Confederate officers and their staffs were quartered here. A nearby stable and the surrounding homes were used to house the wounded. The Inn fell to disrepair and some ill-repute for several decades until the previous owner bought it and lovingly restored it.

THE HAUNTED

Visitors to the Inn have said the rocking chair in one of the rooms moves on its own. Guests' personal belongings have moved or been rearranged.

Several visitors are frightened when they felt as if someone was on the bed with them while they rested.

Guests and employees are surprised to find a man in a Confederate uniform in the hall or the bar. People heard the footsteps of one or several people in the hall when no one is there.

When Ghost Hunters visited and a picture frame in Grant's room moved on the table.
