History

Death Valley, CA is home to one of the most haunted places the state, Amargosa Opera House and Hotel. Come explore its mystery with Haunted Journeys.

THE HISTORY

Sitting in the middle of Death Valley, one of the harshest and most extreme environments on earth stands the Amargosa Opera House. The name Amargosa implies ""bitter"" in Spanish. The property constructed in the 1920's served as an opera house and hotel, built by the Pacific Borax Mining Company to accommodate its mine workers. Since the late 1960s, the house was owned by Marta Becket, a free-spirited and very talented artist and dancer that stumbled into the property and decided to restore life into the run-downed opera house and inn. After her death in 2017, the non-profit that she created continued the preservation of Death Valley Junction.

THE HAUNTINGS

The Amargosa Opera House and Hotel is haunted by the spirits of borax mining accidents and the bossman. The research found that a former road agent turned janitor named Thomas Blower hanged himself in the part of the hotel known as "Spooky Hollow."

It also revealed the story of a man who was found dead in the sewer plant across the street.

There is also a short heavy woman, called Shotgun Kitty, forner owner of the brothel and bar who ran the town and doesn't like how this place is being run.

Make sure to book room 14 or 15 and take a tour of the Spooky Hollow for the most activity.

This property has been featured on The Dead Files and Ghost Adventures.
