Eureka Springs AR is home to one of the most haunted places in the state, 1905 Basin Park Hotel. Come explore its mystery with Haunted Journeys.
The hotel was built on the site of the Perry House, a home built in 1881 that was destroyed by fire in 1890. The nearby limestone quarry provided the rock for the exterior of the new hotel and the Grand opening was in 1905. Originally it had 100 rooms, elevator, electric lights, steam heat, and telephones in the rooms. In the 1940s, Joe Parkhill purchased the hotel with some investment capital from his uncle. Eventually, Joe started serving illegal alcohol and had an illicit parlor gambling on one floor. One night in 1955, things changed for Joe. The Sheriff planned a raid on the Basin Park Hotel and Joe and several others were arrested. It wasn't long after that the Parkhills sold their interest in the hotel. The current owners purchased in 1997.
An interesting fact about the hotel is that every floor is ground level because it is built into the mountain.
The haunting in this historic and beautiful hotel has become the center of the latest in ghost sightings in this quaint Ozark community. “The sightings and reports of encounters have become too frequent and too compelling to overlook,” said Jack Moyer, hotel general manager. “It seems, therefore, that we have new permanent guests here at The Basin Park Hotel and we welcome all new guests... even if they’re ghosts.”
Remnants of the energy that stood and stand there presently have been noted as the core reasons for the hauntings at the Basin. In the footprints of the Basin Park Hotel once stood the Perry House. It was a 4 story hotel that burned early in the 1900s. Many people died on the fourth floor during the fire. The third floor of the Basin Park is in the same area as the fourth floor was in the Perry House since the bottom floor of the Basin is the Lobby. From this, many have reported that room 321 is known to be very active. One of the experiences that have been noted is that of a man wearing a brown suit walk into their rooms, and not through an opened door!
There are stories of visitors seeing a blonde-haired woman smiling but not looking very friendly. She has steel blue eyes and cotton candy blonde hair! There is also a young girl seen on the property, that has pigtails and wears a yellow dress. A full-figured lady with curly, red hair who has appeared drinking milk and eating cookies has made her presence known in the coffeehouse. Her presence has actually been confirmed by a visiting medium. There is also another woman in a white dress wandering the hotel halls.
Need more ghosts? A tall, thin man with a brown beard wearing a tan suit and hat has been seen in both the Grand Ballroom and Room 519. Like to be entertained? You may also see Victorian couples dancing in the Barefoot Ballroom. A spirit visits Room 408 and "sexually charges" guests. (Not sure what THAT means!)
Be ready to experience these apparitions just about anywhere in this property! You will also find photographed orbs that the staff confirm are not "dust balls"! Also, you may experience objects unexplainably moved around in the guests' rooms on their own! You will hear disembodied footsteps, that may follow you, accompanied with strong sensations of "being watched".
