Eastsound WA is home to one of the most haunted places in the state, Rosario Resort. Come explore its mystery with Haunted Journeys.
Built between 1906-1909 by Robert Moran, who was a shipbuilder and later mayor. The resort has a large display of ships built by the Moran Brothers Company. Robert Moran arrived in Seattle from New York in 1875. He became a ship's engineer and worked on several of John Muir's Alaska expeditions. His brothers moved to Seattle and they formed The Moran Bros. Company, a small family ship repair business. The company was a supplier for the Yukon Gold Rush, then a major shipyard. The stress of business took its toll on Robert's health and by 1904, he was told he had only a few years to live. He purchased land on Orcas Island in the San Juan Islands in Northern Puget Sound and began to build his retirement home. Moran's health improved and he lived until 1943.
Moran sold Rosario to Donald Rheem in 1938. Rheem was the founder of Rheem Manufacturing, which is known today for water heaters and heat pumps. Rosario was Rheem's vacation home for 20 years. Ralph Curtain purchased Rosario from Rheem in 1958 and wanted to turn it into a resort, but that ended when Curtain's oil wells dried up. He sold Rosario in 1960 to Gil Geiser, who opened Rosario Resort in 1960.
Employees Alice Rheem still calls Rosario home even in death. It is said that when she lived there, she would ride a bike to the bar at night wearing only a night-gown. Her ghost has been spotted on the second and third floors wearing a 1930s red dress and sometimes riding her motorcycle. Guests have reported seeing apparitions in the parking lot, walking down the stairs near the main lobby, and hearing footsteps in the halls when no one is there.
