History

Stowe VT is home to one of the most haunted places in the state, Green Mountain Inn. Come explore its mystery with Haunted Journeys.

The History

The Green Mountain Inn has been welcoming guests since 1833. Peter C. Lovejoy built the hotel in 1833 then traded it to Stillman Churchill for a 350-acre farm. Churchill added two brick wings and a large dance hall and renamed the building the Mansfield House. It operated as a hotel, was later renamed the Brick Hotel and in 1893 became the Green Mountain Inn when Mark C. Lovejoy purchased it.

The Inn has hosted many famous people over the years, including President Chester A. Arthur and Gerald Ford. In 1982 it was purchased by its current owner. A major renovation was started to restore all of the Main Inn and Depot Building original rooms as well as upgrade the building’s infrastructure and safety features. The Inn now offers 103 unique rooms, elegant suites, and luxurious Village apartments.

Specifically, the history component that is strongly associated with the hauntings has to do with the son of an Inn chambermaid and horseman, Boots. He was born in 1840 in Room 302 of the Inn’s third-floor servants’ quarters and grew up to be a respected horseman himself. He realized local fame when he saved stagecoach passengers from certain doom when the coach’s horses bolted down Stowe’s Main Street one day. Boots traveled across America, many times enjoying risky behavior. His drinking landed him in a New Orleans jail where he learned how to dance (hence the origin of his nickname “Boots”). When he returned to Stowe, fate would call him a hero again where he saved the life of a little girl from being stranded on the Inn’s roof during a severe snowstorm. Unfortunately, the hero did not get to enjoy the rewards from his efforts. Boots reached the girl and lowered her to safety before slipping and falling to his death – from the roof above Room 302. (The room he was born in.)

The Hauntings

The spirit that is said to haunt this property is Boots Berry. Legend has it that Boots’ rooftop tap dancing steps can still be heard today during a snowstorm.
