Portland, OR is home to one of the most haunted places in the state, Kells Irish Restaurant & Bar. Come Explore its mystery with Haunted Journeys.

The History

One of the historic imprints that have elicited spiritual energy involves one of its original purposes. E.R. Butterworth and Sons Mortuary established in 1903 on this location for people that died early in the 1900s from disease and mining accidents that dominated this town. The mortuary was challenged with demand, for hundreds of dead bodies were piling in this turn of the century era due to a diphtheria epidemic caused by poor sanitation, mining accidents, and brutal crimes. This was the only establishment to handle the burials needed.

There is also a story that embraces tragedy and anguish, contributing to its hauntings. Some of the dead that arrived at the mortuary had been patients of Doctor Linda Hazard. As a physician, she believed one could treat disease with starvation. She did so by limited her patients to thin bone broth and applying regular enemas. This created havoc of unnecessary death due to her practices.

The Hauntings

You know a property must be haunted when all the bar owners agree that its dark history has clung to their establishment.

This place is filled with activity. Supernatural forces are said to have shattered mirrors and facilitating plaster to fall off the walls without explanation. Glasses inexplicably slide to the edge of the bar and crash to the floor. You may also hear the sounds of disembodied footsteps and whispers that carry a tone of agony and torture. An apparition of a thin man has been seen in the kitchen. Some say it could one of Dr. Hazard's patients looking for food.

Another apparition of a child has been spotted on the second floor. Many of the spirits that appear to staff or patrons have been described as bone-thin, again tracing back to the practices of Dr. Hazard.

On November 1, 2005 (which happens to be All Saint's Day) went on record and told a story she just cannot explain. She described seeing a very tall man who looked like he was part black. He wor a suit jacket. She added the man had very thin hands and walked to the end of the bar while fading.

Ranking as one of the most haunted places in Oregon, the Irish Bar was featured on Travel Channel's Ghost Adventures in 2010. Interestingly, Zak Bagan's team captured an image of a disfigured child sitting on the steps in the bar. The picture has been added to our second gallery of photos below.
