Bel-Nor, MO is home to one of the most haunted places in the state, Exorcist House. Come Explore its mystery with Haunted Journeys.
The Exorcist House is where the real-life story behind William Peter Blatty’s novel “The Exorcist” took place. In the late 1940s, unexplained activity began to take place in their home dripping, rapping, and scratching sounds and the source of the activity couldn’t be located. It was a 14-year-old boy, given the pseudonym Roland Doe, who was believed to have suffered from demonic possession. Eleven days after the activity started, Roland’s aunt passed away and he attempted to contact his aunt with an Ouija board. It was thought that his use of the Ouija board cause him to become possessed by a demon. The activity began to escalate, furniture moved by itself, objects levitated and scratches appeared on Roland’s body.
The family first turned to medical and psychiatric doctors, who could find no explanation for his behavior, so then the family contacted their Lutheran priest for guidance. This was when the exorcisms began, both Lutheran and later Catholic. It was also around this time that the family moved to St. Louis to seek further help, and where 8435 Roanoke Dr. became their new home. The boy was moved from the house to the rectory, and finally to the hospital. The exorcism itself was said to have been a month-long process. Roland went on to live a normal life after the final exorcism.
The Travel Channel’s Ghost Adventures show was brought in to investigate ghostly activity for their landmark 100th episode. The idea was to dig deeper into the home itself and find more clues about possessions and the exorcisms that follow. The two-story brick house is privately owned, so it’s not possible to visit inside. Still, you can take a casual stroll down the residential cul-de-sac and observe the home where this spooky paranormal activity took place.
