Mount Holly, NJ is home to one of the most haunted places in the state, Burlington County Prison Museum. Come Explore its mystery with Haunted Journeys.
The prison itself operated from 1811 until 1965, and its purpose was to try and rehabilitate it’s prisoner population. At the time of its closing in 1965, it was the oldest operating prison in the United States. It now operates as a museum. Executions were common at this prison. Public hangings took place right in the prison yard, on gallows erected for each event.
One of the earliest executions was done a few miles from the prison, and records show that a significant crowd was assembled. The man’s name was Joel Clough, and his body was actually buried in the prison yard. It is believed that Joel’s ghost is the most significant haunting. But it doesn’t stop there, as there were many more violent deaths at the prison. Today, ghost hunters and other visitors often feel a “dread” in the basement cells. Some have captured dark, sinister voices on their recorders, and there have been reports of full body ghostly apparitions.
