History

Auburn, AL is home to one of the most haunted places in the state, Auburn University Chapel. Come Explore its mystery with Haunted Journeys.

THE HISTORY

The Chapel is the second-oldest building on the Auburn University campus. It was built in 1851 as a Presbyterian church. During the Civil War, it briefly served as a Confederate hospital for wounded soldiers. In the late 1800s, it was used as classrooms when the nearby Alabama Agricultural and Mechanical College burned in 1887.
The building was sold to the university in 1921 and served as the YMCA/YWCA center for a few years.
For nearly 50 years it housed the Auburn Players Theater, the college's acting troupe. It was converted to the Auburn University Chapel, an interdenominational, multipurpose building in 1973.

THE HAUNTINGS

Its use as a Civil War hospital may explain the reports of the ghost of a Confederate soldier named Sydney. When the theater group used it, props would disappear and rehearsals were usually interrupted by strange noises coming from the attic.
