History

St. Paul VA is home to one of the most haunted places in the state, Big Bull Tunnel. Come explore its mystery with Haunted Journeys.

The History

Although there is no exact date, construction on the tunnel probably started in the 1870s or early 1880s and took three years. The construction for the 1,700-foot-long tunnel was not without its share of problems, rockslides, cave-ins and floods even though there was no evidence of unstable soil.

Several people have died in the tunnel. Three men died from accidental explosions while working in the tunnel. A flagman was injured in 1896 when his rail car hit a rock and threw him from the train. In 1900, a freight train collided with an engine. Several of the crews were injured and two died. An experienced engineer was thrown from the train and died in the tunnel in 1901. Another engineer suffered a similar fate in 1904.

A night watchman was murdered and robbed in the tunnel in 1892 and the case was never solved.

The Hauntings

Railway officials were inspecting the tunnel in 1905 when a flagman who had entered the tunnel came running out, claiming he heard unearthly sounds. Two other men went inside the tunnel to find the cause of the noises and heard moaning from behind the bricks.

One asked, “What do you want?” and heard a voice say, “Remove that awful weight from my body.” then added, “They are drinking my blood.”

Just a reminder if you plan to visit the tunnel, it is on private property, and trains still pass through.
