Providence RI is home to one of the most haunted places in the state, Benefit Street. Come explore its mystery with Haunted Journeys.

The History

Providence Rhode Island is beaming with history and its efforts to preserve it. Benefit Street in Providence, Rhode Island, is no exception, if not the crown jewel. It is a mile of history on a cobblestone street lined with historic buildings. It is the most impressive concentration of original Colonial homes in America. Beautifully restored houses, churches, and museums overlook the city's historic waterfront. The Nightingale-Brown House was built in 1792 and home to five generations of the Nicholas Brown Family (of Brown University), which is a must-see.

The Hauntings

Why is Benefit Street so drenched with Phantoms? Some offer a simple and possible explanation. When the city was expanding in its early days, the bodies that had once been buried in people's backyards had to be moved. Not all the corpses were relocation. Some were left behind.

People have seen an apparition of an actual horse-drawn carriage coming down the street only to have it disappear. There are sightings of an old woman in the attic window of one of the historic homes. There are even reports of the spirit of Edgar Allen Poe walking the streets of this area during the early morning hours. It is said that Poe had been dating a woman from this area before his death.
