History

Jacksonville, FL is home to one of the most haunted places in the state, Anne Lytle School (Devil's School). Come Explore its mystery with Haunted Journeys.

The History

Originally called Riverside Park School, Annie Lytle Elementary School was built in 1891. As the population increased in the area, wings and extensions were added to the building. After a new school was built, the building was used as office space and storage for the Duval County Public School System until it was condemned in 1971. In 1995, there was a fire that led to the roof of the auditorium to cave in. A company purchased the property in 1999 to build condominiums, but due to public outcry, the city approved historic landmark designation in 2000, halting any plans for demolition for the time being.

Today it stands abandon and neglected, dangerous and structurally unsafe. If you choose to visit, do so with caution. The school itself is fenced in and labeled no trespassing.

The Hauntings

There are many spooky legends associated with the Anne Lytle School. All its haunted phenomenon started happening in the '60s when the rumor is that a furnace exploded and killed several people. It is said that ever since that tragic day, the ghosts of the victims have haunted the school building.

Another legend is that a priest was called in to exorcise the demonic spirits so the school could be re-opened.

There is also a story about a depressed janitor that went on a killing spree at the school.
