The Main Street Armory, built in 1905 as headquarters for western New York’s 3rd Battalion, is also historically significant for its association with American military history. The volunteer militia (ie: the National Guard) has been and to an extent still is the backbone of the American military system since the colonial era. The Main Street Armory, like virtually all other National Guard armories, remains a prominent visual reminder and monument of the pivotal role played by the volunteer militia in American military history.
The Rochester Main Street Armory is now known for having pretty intense ghostly activity. Perhaps the ghosts are lingering souls that met their demise during soldier training accidents that were common in the early years. Decades of live firing activities that occurred in this property, chances were very high that soldiers perished here. After many years of disrepair, restoring efforts appear to bring restore the spectral presence! Many people report full bodied apparitions and moving objects. In the basement, people have been grabbed and poked. In an empty wing, a baby carriage moves around the room by itself. Disembodied footsteps are heard, while locker doors move as well. The people who are most familiar with the entity haunting the armory, refer to him as Ghost Boy. So impressive are the hauntings, it has been feature on Sci Fi channel’s Ghost Hunters when they investigated the property on season seven. Today, the property offers private investigations to those that seek paranormal studies. In addition it celebrates its hauntings, offering a haunted house with spook factors intensified during the Halloween Season!
