Philadelphia, PA is home to one of the most haunted places in the state, Eastern State Penitentiary. Come explore its mystery with Haunted Journeys.

Although prison reformers in the early 1800s intended to issue isolation as penitent rehabilitation, it can do strange things to a person. Prisoners were allowed the few hours of the day to exercise their legs, but they were forced to wear sacks over their heads (eye holes were not added until the early 1900s). Eastern State Penitentiary accepted and held prisoners for over 140 years.

Throughout its history, prisoners were subjected to various forms of torture, the ice-cold water baths, chaining their tongues to their wrists, which could cause the tongue to tear and being strapped into chairs with tight leather restraints for days. The worst-behaved prisoners wee put in "The Hole," an underground cellblock where they would have no light, no human contact, and little food for as long as two weeks. The prison was closed in late 1969.

Almost every cell block has some strange, unusual, supernatural occurrence. Full-bodied apparitions have been seen wandering with the sack over their heads.

Other dark presences said to be still lurking the hallways are those of the more notorious inmates that served time in the prison. From Alphonse "Scarface" Capone to William "Blackie" Zupkoski, the former residents make up a melee of murders, mobsters and bank robbers.
