New York City, NY is home to one of the most haunted places in the state, Dakota Building. Come Explore its mystery with Haunted Journeys.
Construction on The Dakota began in 1880 and was completed in 1884. The Dakota originally had 65 apartments, with no two apartments being alike. There are staircases and elevators placed in the four corners of the courtyard for access to the apartments.
John Lennon has been reported to have appeared at the place where he was gunned down, the Dakota. Yoko Ono told the most famous story of Lennon’s ghost appearing at the Dakota. Yoko lived at the Dakota for 20 years after Lennon’s death, saw him sitting at his piano. He turned to her and said, “Don’t be afraid. I am still with you,” then disappeared.
Two passersby saw him standing at the entrance of the Dakota in 1983.
Ironically, while he was alive, Lennon had a ghost haunting experience while living in the Dakota, himself. Lennon said he saw a spirit he called The Crying Lady walking the halls of the building.
It is thought that the Crying Lady that Lennon and others who have seen is the ghost of Elise Vesley, who managed the Dakota from the 1930s to the 1950s. Mrs. Vesley suffered a tragedy when her son was hit by a truck outside the Dakota. The boy died, they say, Mrs. Vesley was never the same.
