Sligo, Ireland is home to one of the most haunted places in the country, Carrowkeel Passage Tombs. Come Explore its mystery with Haunted Journeys.
The Carrowkeel underground tunnels and tombs pre-dates the pyramids by 800 years. They form an ancient passage tomb cluster in south County Sligo, Ireland, high above Ireland’s west coast. A legend reveals this was the burial site of Queen Maeve and Newgrange, who was the jewel of the eastern necropolis on the Boyne. These mysterious remains are said to be associated with the good god, the Dagda, and his son Aengus Óg.
Yes, these tunnels are ancient. Later inhabitants from the Bronze Age took hold of these tunnels. Later Celtic-speaking peoples arrived in Iron Age Ireland thousands of years after the great passage tombs fell into disuse. With resistance, they held the tunnels with great protection, believing they were the homes of gods. Sometimes called the Bricklieve Tombs, these gravesites are on the Bricklieve Hills and overlooking Lough Arrow.
There is a hint of magic these strangely shaped finger-like projections that embrace the mountainsides. The power of Carrowkeel that is felt, has created its own folklore and New Age spiritual practices. Many go to witness the light-show that is put out yearly when the summer solstice sunlight streams through the roof-box of one of the caves.
Some of the local farmers of an older generation may still recount stories of how they saw lights and heard music coming from nearby “fairy forts” (Earthen Ring Forts). Walking through this amazing labyrinth of historical tragedies, you will feel the energies of the spirits that lurk behind. You will also feel like you’ve been transported back in time, for a time that was often very dark.
Visitors to the site are asked not to climb on or damage the monuments in any way, and not to take anything in or out of the tombs. Irish folklore holds that it is bad luck to damage or disrespect such tombs and that doing so could bring a curse.
