Sligo is home to one of the most haunted places in Ireland, Creevykeel Court Tomb Ancient Site.  Come Explore its mystery with Haunted Journeys.

The History

The tomb is a prehistoric monument located in County Sligo, in the Irish province of Connacht. Although court tombs may be found in various parts of western and Northern Ireland, the Creevykeel Court Tomb is often reckoned to be one of the finest examples of this type of tomb in the country. Though it is recognized that the tomb was built during the Prehistoric period, there is evidence that it was re-used during the Early Christian period.

Because of its picturesque setting, snuggled at the foothills of the Tievebaun Mountain and not far from the sea, it has been called by the local population as Caisleán Bhaoisgin, which, translated from Irish, may be said to mean ‘Castle of Enchantment’.

The Hauntings

The court tomb was also known as the ‘Giants’ Graves’ when it was first cataloged in 1909 and has continued to hold an air of mystery until the present day. At one point, a local villager said that he saw lights coming from within the tomb. The only explanation he could offer was that it was the ‘little people’', which remains a mystery today.

He continues to offer an explanation, "This is their property here, you see. It wasn’t excavated at that time, now. It was all covered over in trees. So it was much more sinister-looking at that time than it is now.”
