Edinburgh is home to one of the most haunted places in Scotland, Palace of Holyroodhouse. Come Explore its mystery with Haunted Journeys.
The Palace of Holyroodhouse, also known as Holyroodhouse Palace is deeply absorbed with the stories and legends of crimes committed, and its victims.
The beginnings of Holyroodhouse Palace are within the ancient foundations of the old foundations of the Augustinian Holyrood Abbey that there. This foundation was built in 1128 by the order of King David I of Scotland. Later around the 1300s, the building was expanded and converted into a residence. Later in the 15th century, it became a palace fit for the royals of Scotland and England. It's most famous of all, was Mary, Queen of Scots, who went to live at Holyrood Palace in 1561.
Since 1566, the Holyroodhouse remains one of the most important residences of the British Royal Family. But as many ancient legendary properties, its rich and intense history has invited and imprisoned restless souls within the palace walls.
Although breathtakingly beautiful, the Hoylrrodhouse is saturated with the energy of spirits that cannot find peace.
It's infamously known as the scene of David Rizzio's murder in 1566. Rizzio was believed to have been Mary Queen of Scots’ lover. Her husband Lord Darnley, was informed of the affair, and later ordered Rizzio's murder, which occurred in Mary's dining room, with Mary present, and seven months pregnant. The bloodstains from the murder are said to reappear no matter how many times they’re scrubbed clean.
Lord Darnley, the killer and Mary's husband, himself is said to haunt his old rooms at Holyrood. He also, it is believed, met a gruesome end, after an explosion destroyed his living quarters. Many people are of the understanding that Mary secretly ordered the death of Darnley, to seek revenge for the death of Rizzio.
Another restless soul is a witch named Agnes Sampson, whose tearful company has been known to scare visitors who visit the ancient residence. Accused of being a witch, she was killed in 1592, stripped, and tortured to death. Many have reported having seen her roam, in naked form, the palace and grounds at night.
According to accounts of visitors, the long, dark halls of Holyrood Palace are sometimes swept with unexpected winds, and the sound of crying can be heard emanating from the basement.
