Dundee is home to one of the most haunted places in Scotland, Claypotts Castle. Come Explore its mystery with Haunted Journeys.
The castle was originally built by John Strachan around 1569–1588 according to dates inscribed on stones that make up parts of the castle, which make its construction longer than usual for such a small building. The castle was passed through a number of notable families until it was gifted to the State in 1588. Claypotts Castle sits between Dundee and Broughty Ferry and is unusual, not only for its distinctive design of square rooms corbelled out over circular towers but also because it remains almost completely unaltered since it was constructed in 1588.
There is a fun legend that the castle was once home to an industrious brownie who helped the servants with their work, but that he left in disgust because of a lazy kitchen maid.
For many reasons, perhaps its history or its design, it is known as "Scotland's Quirkiest Castle".
The ghost of a woman in white has been witnessed at the castle on many occasions, always standing and looking out of one of the top floor windows. She is sometimes said to appear, very distressed, at an upstairs window waving to passersby with her handkerchief. She only appears on May 29th, which has led to one tale that she is Marion Ogilvie who was the ill-fated Cardinal Beaton’s mistress. On May 29th, 1546, she waited in vain, as the Cardinal lay murdered in St Andrews Castle. On the anniversary of his death, she resumes her vigil - but here’s the strange part. Claypotts Castle in its present form, and the window from which the White Lady waves, wasn’t built until well after 42 years later.
Because of this, other stories have surfaced. Marion Ogilvy never lived at the Castle - she lived at Melgund Castle - and Cardinal Beaton is not known to have had anything to do with Claypotts Castle either. They claim she was a different woman entirely, mistress to John Graham himself, who was also killed in the 1500’s – in the Battle of Killiecrankie. Maybe we need to go there on May 29th and ask her ourselves?
