Stirling is home to one of the most haunted places in Scotland, Stirling Old Town Jail. Come Explore its mystery with Haunted Journeys.
A little after dawn in the year of 1847 on November 11th, a pitiful parade of petty thievery was marched from the dank and dismal depths of Stirling’s Tolbooth Gaol – (reputed as the 'Worst Jail in Britain’) to across St. John Street, and into the just built County Jail. Today it is better known to its visitors as the "Old Town Jail".
Here, after experiencing the atrocities of Tolbooth Gaol, they experienced "luxury", all fed and assigned to their own cell. This "Separate System" was designed to encourage reflection and repentance as a means to reform the criminals.
Regardless, life at the Jail was also known to be horrific, brutal and very isolating for the inmates who found themselves spending time inside this prison. The Separate System proved to be a poor choice that ignited deep isolation to reach points of madness.
In addition, many would, as a form of punishment, have to spend hours working the “crank machine” This was a hard repetitive task of lifting and dropping sand that served no purpose other than for punishment. The results were harsh and sometimes bloody outcomes. For other more deserving inmates, time spent in the “dark room” (aka solitary confinement) in a tiny chamber with only a small light source some 40 feet above.
By 1888, the County Jail became the Military Detention Barracks for the Scottish Regiment, until decommissioned by the War Office in 1935.
During the mid-20th Century, the jail fell into disrepair until the 1990’s when restoration work was carried out on this derelict site.
At one point, it was known as the "Sweetie Factory", form its time as a storage facility for the Caldedonian Confectionary Company. In 1996 – 2012 and again in 2015 to the present day, the jail has served as a tourist’s visitor site
As with most incarcerating primal spaces, there are many reports of paranormal activity. Reports of witnessed dark shadows and hearing the cries of crying children have been documented.
There are also disembodied sounds of bodies being dragged down the corridors. Poltergeist activity has been witnessed and some visitors report being touched by an unseen anomaly.
