Monticello, IA is home to one of the most haunted places in the state, The Edinburgh Manor. Come explore its mystery with Haunted Journeys.

The History

When Edinburgh was the county seat for Jones County, a grant signed by President Buchanan in June 1840, allowed the land that Edinburgh Manor is nestled in to be deeded for purposes of the courthouse. When the county seat changed, the grant was kept for the establishment of the County Poor Farm.

Described as a "comfortable retreat for the lazy, able-bodied and willingly dependent applicants," the Poor Farm housed the poor, incurably insane and disabled. Tenants were given shelter and food for their labor. They would farm agriculture and livestock. The poor farm was in operation from 1850-1910. Back then, farming was a dangerous task and many accidents and deaths resulted in the addition of a cemetery, where over 150+ documented deaths have been recorded on the property. They were buried in a chilling cemetery far back on the property.

The poor farm was shut down and demolished in 1910. Then in 1910, Edinburgh Manor was constructed, to serve as a house for the incurably insane, the poor, and the elderly. Highly chastised and scrutinized, the blistered property remained open until just recently in 2010. When the last patients and staff left the Edinburgh Manor, "artifacts" were left behind, including actual old medical records and even personal belongings. Some say they left even more. Could there be restless souls left behind these walls as well?

Today, the building is open for historical/haunted ghost tours and overnight stays for paranormal investigations.

The Hauntings

One unsettling note, today the property remains intact, as it was left abandoned (what seems to be) overnight in 2010. Furniture, personal belongs, and even paperwork is left basically untouched. Its almost as if the last residents couldn't wait to get out of there when it was time to leave.

Be warned, from the beginning, this is not a property for the faint of heart. One of its spirits called "The Joker" is known to be violent, throwing plates across the room and attempting to choke visitors. There is actual poltergeist activity in this space.

Unfortunately, The Joker is the most common otherwordly visitor at the facility. He has an absolute eerie presence, often presenting himself as orbs in photos. Sometimes you will see him creep in the dark shadows of its rooms. Most frightfully, some visitors have felt his hands around their neck obstructing their airway and unable to breathe.

Edinburgh Manor is a tribute to history. They serve to remind us of dark history and its unspeakable horrors our civilization has, at one point, bestowed to its vulnerable members of the community.

The television cast of Ghost Adventures has featured this haunted property on their series.
