History

Cardiff Wales is home to one of the most haunted places in Wales, Castell Coch. Come Explore its mystery with Haunted Journeys.

The History

Built in 1870, this stunning 19th Century fairy-tale castle was constructed for the wealthiest man in the world the Marquis of Bute. Castell Coch was designed with a medievalism look, possessing a lofty exterior and an absolutely stunning interior. The foundation, although, is said to date back 700 years, said to have witnessed several tragic events.

The Hauntings

Following the death of the Marquis of Bute, Lady Gwendolyn Bute continued to live in the castle but was, it is rumored, driven out by the constant appearances of the ghostly white lady. She is said to be a servant who lived in the castle.

It is said she still haunts the premises. She is thought to be Dame Griffiths. Her son was said to have tragically fell into a pool of dark water within the castle precincts and was never seen again. Dame was inconsolable and did from a broken heart. Now her phantom is recognized as the White Lady who wanders about the castle and its surrounding woods. she is seen as a wretched figure often spotted through the castle's sumptuous passages and corridors of the present building.

There is also the ghost of a cavalier seen walking around the castle grounds, suspected of protecting this majestic palace. Others believe that this is the spirit of a man that had been lucky enough to lay his hand on a large amount of treasure, which he buried somewhere on the grounds of Castle Coch. Could he be still checking on his hidden riches and assuring they are safe? The treasure is also watched over by three ghostly eagles.
